How to increase footfall in a retail store using Google, Instagram and WhatsApp

Practical ways for shops in Modinagar, Ghaziabad and NCR to bring more customers through the door using Google Business Profile, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Short answer: to increase footfall, make sure people searching nearby find you, trust you and know why to visit this week. That means a complete Google Business Profile with accurate hours, photos and products; a steady flow of recent Google reviews; Instagram reels that show what is new in the shop; WhatsApp updates to customers who have opted in; and a reason to come in now, such as a new arrival, an event or a time-bound offer. Then measure calls, direction requests and redemptions, so you know what works.

Retail is one of the industries we work with most at Arcbig: clothing and saree shops, jewellers, furniture showrooms, electronics stores, opticians and supermarkets across Modinagar, Ghaziabad and the rest of NCR. The common worry is always the same: "People order online now. How do I get them to come to the shop?" The good news is that most people still search on their phone before they visit a local store. This guide shows how to use that.

Do people still search online before visiting a shop?

Yes, and they act quickly. A Google study of smartphone users found that 76% of people who search on their smartphones for something nearby visit a business within a day, and 28% of those searches result in a purchase. The study is from 2016, but the habit has only grown since then.

Payments show the same digital shift. NPCI data shows UPI processed 24.07 billion transactions in September 2026, and much of that is people paying at local shops with their phones. Your customers are online every day, even when they buy in person.

How does Google Business Profile bring people into the shop?

When someone searches "saree shop near me", "furniture showroom Modinagar" or "mobile repair Ghaziabad", Google shows a map with three businesses. Being one of them is the single biggest footfall lever most shops have, and it is free. To improve your chances:

  • Choose the right primary category, such as "Clothing store" or "Furniture store", and add relevant secondary ones.
  • Keep hours accurate, including special hours for Diwali, Eid, weddings and Sunday closures. Few things lose a customer faster than arriving at a closed shutter.
  • Add photos every month: the storefront (so people recognise it from the road), the inside, the counters, new stock, and the staff.
  • Add your products, with photos and prices where possible, especially your bestsellers.
  • Post updates for new arrivals, offers and events. Posts make your profile look active.
  • Answer questions in the Q&A section yourself, before strangers do.
  • Use the same name, address and phone number everywhere: signboard, website, Instagram, JustDial and IndiaMART.

Our guide to Google Business Profile tips goes deeper.

Why do Google reviews matter so much for footfall?

Before visiting a shop they do not know, people read reviews. A store with 300 recent reviews at 4.6 stars looks safer than one with 12 reviews from three years ago, even if the second shop is better. Reviews also help you appear in the local map results.

Build reviews into the daily routine:

  • Ask happy customers at the counter, especially after a good purchase or a compliment.
  • Keep a QR code at billing that opens your review page directly.
  • Send the review link on WhatsApp with the bill or thank-you message.
  • Reply to every review, including negative ones, politely and specifically.

Never buy reviews or offer discounts in exchange for positive ones. Google's rules forbid it. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews explains what is allowed.

What should a shop post on Instagram to bring people in?

Instagram works for retail when it makes people want to see something in person. Content that brings footfall:

  • New arrivals, shown in short reels with a person wearing, using or holding the product.
  • "Only in store" items, limited stock or exclusive pieces that are not online.
  • Try-on and styling videos for clothing, jewellery and footwear.
  • Behind the counter: the owner explaining how to choose, a craftsman at work, unboxing new stock.
  • Customer moments, with permission, such as a bride choosing her lehenga or a family picking a sofa.
  • Clear directions: your landmark, nearby parking and timings, pinned in highlights.

Always tag your location and add your area name in captions, such as "near Govindpuri, Modinagar", so local people find you.

How can WhatsApp bring customers back to the shop?

WhatsApp is where retail customers in India already talk to shops. Use WhatsApp Business to:

  • Send updates only to customers who have opted in, for example a "join our new arrivals list" sign-up at billing.
  • Share a catalogue of key products with prices.
  • Post status updates daily with new stock, offers or a short shop video. Saved contacts see them without you messaging anyone directly.
  • Reply fast to price and availability questions, and invite people to visit to see the item in person.

Keep messages relevant and infrequent. One useful update a week works better than daily promotions that make people mute you. Our WhatsApp Business guide has the setup.

What gives customers a reason to visit this week?

Visibility gets you considered. A reason creates the visit. Ideas that work well in NCR towns:

  • New stock launches announced in advance, with a specific date.
  • Festival and wedding season previews for regular customers, a day before everyone else.
  • Small in-store events: a styling day, a cooking demo, a kids' drawing contest, a free eye check-up weekend for opticians.
  • Time-bound offers that only work in store, with a clear end date.
  • Collaborations with nearby businesses, such as a boutique and a salon running a combined bridal offer.

Plan these around the festival and wedding calendar, at least a month ahead.

How do you know if online marketing is increasing footfall?

Track a few simple numbers every month:

  • Google Business Profile insights: calls, direction requests and website clicks.
  • Reviews: the count and average rating.
  • Instagram: profile visits and messages, not just likes.
  • Offer redemptions: use a code or a "show this post" offer for each channel, so you can see where customers came from.
  • Ask at billing: "How did you hear about us?" Note the answer for a month.

Combine these with your own sales and footfall counts, and you will quickly see which activities are worth repeating.

What mistakes stop online marketing from bringing footfall?

  • Wrong or missing hours on Google.
  • No photos of the storefront, so people cannot find you from the road.
  • Posting only offers, with nothing new to see.
  • Slow replies to messages about price or availability.
  • Inconsistent details across Google, Instagram, JustDial and the signboard.
  • No reason to visit now, so interested people keep postponing.

Frequently asked questions

How can I increase footfall in my retail store?

Keep a complete Google Business Profile with accurate hours and photos, build recent Google reviews, post new arrivals and in-store moments on Instagram, send WhatsApp updates to customers who opted in, and give people a reason to visit soon, such as a launch, event or time-bound offer.

Does Google Business Profile really increase walk-in customers?

Yes. Many people search on their phone before visiting a shop, and appearing in Google's local map results with accurate hours, photos and reviews makes you much more likely to be chosen.

How often should a retail shop post on Instagram?

Three or four times a week, including at least one or two reels of new stock or in-store moments, plus stories on most days.

Is WhatsApp marketing allowed for shops?

Yes, if customers have agreed to receive messages. Use WhatsApp Business, keep messages relevant and occasional, and give people an easy way to opt out.

How do I measure footfall from digital marketing?

Track calls and direction requests in Google Business Profile, use channel-specific offer codes, ask customers at billing how they found you, and compare these with your sales and visitor counts each month.
